Registration, partner distribution and donation programs
These are active 2026 efforts, but they are not ordinary statewide walk-up backpack giveaways. Follow each program’s registration, partner or donation instructions.
Maine State Credit Union — Backpacks 4 ME
Backpacks are distributed through Tools to Thrive, Greater Augusta Back to School Program, Community Cares and Area Interfaith Outreach—not through a statewide walk-up pickup.
Spurwink School Supply Drive
Spurwink aims to provide 600 backpacks and supplies to children and families it serves. This is a collection campaign, not a public family pickup event.
Eastport / St. Croix Back-to-School Supply & Sports Drive
New school supplies and new or gently used sports equipment are collected in Eastport, Machias, Princeton and Calais for distribution through local schools.
Donation-drive distinction: A location accepting backpacks is not automatically a place where families can pick them up. Donation-only programs are deliberately separated from the upcoming public giveaway calendar.

Where can I find free backpack giveaways in Maine in 2026?
Use the confirmed-upcoming table above. As of July 27, organizer-supported events remain in Augusta, Freeport, Sanford and Bath. Check the source link shortly before leaving home.
Do Maine backpack giveaways require registration?
Some do. Penquis requires advance registration by August 4 or until capacity is reached. Stuff the Bus says no preregistration is required, but families should bring a completed index card for each child. Freeport and Bath serve named school communities.
Does the child need to be present?
Rules vary. Stuff the Bus publishes a special 11:30 AM arrival time for adults attending without children. Other organizers may require student attendance or proof of school eligibility.
How are events validated?
A listing is marked confirmed only when a current organizer, school district, government, nonprofit or retailer source shows a 2026 date and Maine location. Donation drives, social-only posts and recurring programs without a public pickup date are separated rather than overstated.
