How to find more backpack assistance in Canada
Call or search 211 in your province and ask for “school supplies,” “backpack program,” “back-to-school assistance” or “basic needs.” Also check school boards, settlement agencies, Indigenous friendship centres and service organizations, food banks, family resource centres, Salvation Army locations, municipal calendars and local charities.
Many Canadian programs do not advertise a public walk-up giveaway. Backpacks may instead be distributed through schools, referrals, registered programs, appointments or private program enrollment.
Frequently asked questions
Are these backpacks really free?
The active rows advertise free backpacks, supplies or no-cost school-support assistance. Registration, residency, income and program-enrollment rules vary.
When should I apply?
Apply as early as possible. Several Ottawa registrations close July 31, and other programs stop accepting applications when spaces are full.
Does my child have to attend?
Some events require the student to be present. Others distribute through a school or community agency. The linked organizer source has the final rules.
